Of Pixels, Of Stars

(2007)

by Paul Justice

I often make my digital camera pictures, initially and especially, for the look of things, where meaning becomes more an afterthought, one that doesn't always click along with the shutter. And for this reason I consider myself more photographer than artist. This "look" usually begins with something visually interesting to the eyes, sometimes with a fascination in anticipation. Other times it may begin in the heart with a desire or in the mind with an idea. Spontaneity and chance frequently occur. Light, form, and composition most always shape. And  the one component of emphasis that holds it all together...joy.

My pictures contain the usual settings of landscape, abstraction, still life, and portraiture, et cetera, but the actual pictures themselves, on this website, are global, and in time...of the universe.

The Universal Way

(2010)

There is more artistry in my photography.....when I creatively abstract a particular kind of object to look like and express another.....where the specific instance of a cloud form can be significant in a beholder's eye.....seeing particular things for what else they can be, making particular things into what else they can be.....how random order and the sequence-ity of things, and their connected-ness, are exhibited through my still photographs.....with reasons why the relations of pictures and their content help to link and substantiate a concrete heartfelt-ness.

Sometimes what you see with the eye doesn't translate as well into the finished picture. The other way can happen too, in that what you successfully photograph isn't necessarily foreseen. Those pictures that exhibit a unexpectantly and surprisingly magical appearance when initially looked upon are examples of the latter. Such photos are not entirely preconceived, but occur in part as a result of supreme happenstance.
